A new home for our toad friend.

A few years ago we noticed there was a total of three toads in our window well. I think it was due to all the rain and flooding we had experienced. I wasn't sure how they had got in there, but we noticed a tiny tunnel on the side of the window well. They created a tiny entrance. We had two in one window well and one that stayed in another alone. My girls gave each toad a name. We had Adorbs, Sweetie, and Little One.

About a month ago we were hit with flooding. One of our window wells completely collapsed.  We're currently working on repairing it. The rain created a slight mudslide which collapsed one and created a pile-up in the other. I'll just say the cleanup process was not fun, not one bit.

We were able to rescue one of the toads, Adorbs. We have not been able to find Sweetie. I really hope she found a way out. We did not originally move them because it seemed as though they loved it down there. I did a lot of research and found that it is common to find them in window wells.

While my husband started repairs on the window well that collapsed, he came across Little One. It looked as though Little One had passed away a few months ago. He was deep under. It appeared as though he dug his way deep down into the ground. It was a sad day, especially for my girls. We are hopeful that Sweetie found a way out.

We rescued Adorbs and created a new habitat for him. My girls and I took a trip down to the pet store and picked out a few things for his new home. We purchased a tiny reptile pond, and I started thinking, why not use a plant saucer. We figured this way he would be able to relax in the water on a hot day.

While at the store we found a cactus terrarium. After, looking up a few other ways to make his home better, we found that we could also create a little getaway for him. A special toad habitat with many resources.
We purchased a cheap pot from our local Lowe's and my husband cut a section from the pot off. This created an entryway for Adorbs to go in and out of.

As always, I wanted my girls to be happy with his new home, my daughters each picked out a plant or two to add. We decided to add faux plants, this way we wouldn't need to worry much about those plants.
After adding him we noticed he feasted on a few spiders. He made himself comfortable and went into the pond.

We noticed he had already dug a tunnel. When the weather gets cold, they will normally go underground to escape the cold. They will stay there until around springtime. We aren't sure why he has disappeared so early since he usually leaves around the middle of September.

We are just so happy that we were able to rescue him and give him a new home.
