Color Changing Carnations.

I remember discussing color-changing celery with my husband. He mentioned experimenting with that when he was in school. I know at some point we all have.  For this experiment we used carnations.  Take three measuring cups and fill them with water. Our daughter then put a few drops of food coloring.-At this point she was excited and ready to add in the carnations.  We allowed them to sit in the food coloring overnight. In the morning we noticed the tips of each flower had changed. Currently, they are sitting in the food coloring. I'm hoping that by this evening we will see more change in color. Have you tried this with your children? If so, how did they react to the color change? Our daughter had a few questions about the color. She specifically wanted to know how it happens.  I figured after exploring creepy crawlers we could enjoy this simple hands-on experiment.  **Update- One carnation changed entirely in color.- Going from white...

Float, sink or absorb?

Will it float, sink, or absorb water? Observation activity This was a great learning/observation activity to do with my little one. I asked questions like, "why do you think the rock sank to the bottom, but the sponge was able to float". I went over the different shapes, and sizes of each object. Also pointing out which ones were lighter, and heavier. I also asked which one she thought would float, sink, or absorb when placed in the water. We went over this a few times, and soon she was able to tell me what would happen when they were placed in the water. Our observations- Rock -when added to the water, they sank to the bottom. Silk flower  absorbed some water but still managed to float above water. Cotton balls immediately  absorbed water, and sank to the bottom. The paper towel absorbed  some water and floated the first time. The second time put into water it sank to the bottom. Jewel , along with buttons all sank to the bo...

I've seen so many creative ways to make maracas, and I thought this one was great! We have two sets of store-bought maracas. Once she was done, we filled them up with macaroni noodles. (Which I forgot to mention as one of the things needed in the picture above)  Below you can view the video we played and danced to. This week we have been very hands-on with learning, and fun activities! We splashed, dumped, and strained the water, it was so much fun.  Yesterday we decorated a rock and made a little Rock pet.  We even made a little bed for it. :) This is a fun activity for little ones. Very hands-on. Materials: Tissue paper Craft eyes Jewels pom pom We did a fun and simple counting activity. All you need for this activity is counters, paper, markers, and a few colors We made some cute paper bracelets.  My daughter decorated them with stickers, jewels, and washi tape and colored them. The Very Hungry Caterpillar activity

Our daughter loves the book "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle. We did a little interactive learning activity to go along with this book. This activity allowed my daughter to engage and interact with the book as we read through it. As you read through the book with your little one, your child can go through and pick out each item you read out loud. My daughter loved the caterpillar we created, and she even had him eating through each item of food. She made the munching sound and all. She's two and just loves exploring books. We worked on naming each picture, colors, and counting. She's getting so good at saying the days of the week. That's something else we worked on while doing this activity too. I just used construction paper, hole puncher, crayons, laminate, and scissors. Create and then have fun with your little one. :) Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children. -Charles R. Swindol...
