Colorful Summer Flower: Recycled Paper Towel DIY

Looking to bring a little sunshine into your space without visiting the craft store? This whimsical summer flower decoration makes great use of what you already have—think beads, pom poms, a humble paper towel tube, and a splash of acrylic paint. Bonus: it’s the perfect way to reuse an old frame and welcome summer in style!

Summer flower Decoration

What You’ll Need:
  • 1 paper towel tube (emptied, of course!)
  • Acrylic paint (I chose a deeper pink)
  • Craft pom poms (yellow makes a great center!)
  • Assorted beads (medium for the stem, smaller for embellishing the petals)
  • Foam letters (for your summer message)
  • A reused frame (square or any shape of your choice)
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
Materials for flower decoration

Creating your summer flower decoration

Cut the Tube and Shape the Petals
Start by cutting the paper towel tube into four evenly-sized sections. Each section will serve as a petal. You should be left with four rings. Next, flatten each ring, then gently reshape it to form soft ovals. These will mimic delicate flower petals.

Paint Your Petals:
Now, take your acrylic paint and add color to your oval petals. I went with a bold, dark pink for a vibrant contrast.

Build the Blossom and Add the Center
Hot glue the four petals onto the repainted frame, arranging them in a circle to create your flower. Pop a cheerful craft pom pom right in the middle of your flower—it brings the whole thing to life.

Create the Stem and Add Beads
Use medium-sized beads to form the flower stem and glue them just below the bloom. Dab a little hot glue into each petal and sprinkle in the smaller beads. It adds a glimmering, playful texture.

Freshen Up Your Frame
Originally, the frame was painted white, but I decided to add a lighter green color to it. Once the paint dries, you will notice whether it is lighter or if you want it darker; simply add a few extra coats of paint to achieve your desired color.

Customize by Adding Letters:
Customize the look with foam letters. I decided to spell out "Hello Summer." I painted the letters to match the theme and glued them onto the frame.

Final Touches:

And that's it! You’ve got yourself a fun, festive decoration that’s bright, eco-friendly, and full of personality—just like summer itself. Hang it on a wall or prop it on a shelf to remind everyone that sunny days and warm breezes are here to stay. 🌼🌞🖌️
