Color Changing Carnations.





I remember discussing color-changing celery with my husband. He mentioned experimenting with that when he was in school. I know at some point we all have.  For this experiment we used carnations. 
Take three measuring cups and fill them with water. Our daughter then put a few drops of food coloring.-At this point she was excited and ready to add in the carnations. 

We allowed them to sit in the food coloring overnight. In the morning we noticed the tips of each flower had changed. Currently, they are sitting in the food coloring. I'm hoping that by this evening we will see more change in color. Have you tried this with your children? If so, how did they react to the color change?

Our daughter had a few questions about the color. She specifically wanted to know how it happens.  I figured after exploring creepy crawlers we could enjoy this simple hands-on experiment. 

**Update- One carnation changed entirely in color.- Going from white to yellow. The pink carnation changed around the flower edges-red. And the white one soaking in green food coloring also changed around the edges.**

    I've never tried this before but I love the look of dyed carnations. It sounds like a fun little experiment to do with your daughter.

    I was a florist for a bunch of years and we did this a lot. They even make stylized bouquets like a pompom mum puppy in a basket. It is a very enjoyable craft and way to express creativity. Carnations are a great pick because they last a really long time. Blessings~

      Meredith, you know I've actually heard of some florist shops doing that. I think that is so neat. I've never would have thought but after many discussions about coloring flowers I see now. How cool! And yes they sure do last a long time! Thanks for stopping by. :)

    I need to try this with my kids. They would love seeing the flowers change colors and I would love how beautiful they look in an arrangement. Great experiment :)

    i did this back in elementary or something similar. It's a pretty simple experiment to do with kids :)

Simple Diy Autumn Floral Arrangement

  This simple Autumn floral arrangement takes just a few materials.  And is a beautiful addition to any space!  Materials needed 1 metal pitcher -The metal pitcher that I am using was purchased at Target and was $3. 1 lighted leaf garland - I purchased this lighted leaf garland at my local Michael's Store It takes two double A batteries. 1  can of spray paint I wanted to add some color to my pitcher.
