Dollar Tree DIY: Upcycled Metal House Christmas Decor

One of my favorite aspects of crafting is bringing new life to old projects—and this upcycled metal house from Dollar Tree is a perfect example. Previously painted for a different theme, this little house is getting a wintery makeover with decoupage, faux foliage, and a touch of holiday magic. If you have a metal house decor piece tucked away from a past DIY, this is your sign to take it out and transform it into a charming Christmas accent. Let’s get started!

Materials Needed

  • One metal house decor from Dollar Tree (previously painted is perfectly fine!)
  • One decorative napkin for decoupage (I used one with a Christmas wreath design)
  • Mod Podge
  • Scissors
  • Paintbrush
  • Holiday/Christmas faux foliage
  • Optional: Epsom salt or faux snow
  • Optional: Gold glitter glue

 Prep Your Napkin and Add it to the Metal House

Choose a napkin with a festive design—wreaths, holly, or winter florals work beautifully. Cut out the design portion, including the center if needed. Carefully separate the top printed layer from the backing.

Using a paintbrush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the area of the metal house where you want to place the napkin. Gently press the napkin onto the Mod Podge, smoothing it out with your fingers or a paintbrush.

Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge over the napkin to seal it. Let it dry naturally or use a heat tool to speed up the process.



For a touch of shimmer, dip a small brush into gold glitter glue and lightly apply it to the leaves or accents on your napkin design. This adds a subtle festive glow.



Decorate the Base
Using a hot glue gun, attach your faux foliage to the base of the metal house. Think pine sprigs, berries, or mini ornaments for a holiday vibe.

Create a Snowy Scene

To finish, dab a bit of Mod Podge between the foliage and sprinkle Epsom salt or faux snow over it. This creates a cozy, snow-dusted effect that feels straight out of a winter village.

Final Touches

And just like that, your metal house has a brand-new seasonal look! This project is a wonderful reminder that older decor can be refreshed with just a few simple materials and a little creativity. Whether you place it on a shelf, tuck it into a centerpiece, or gift it to a friend, this upcycled piece is sure to spread holiday cheer.

This project involves using air-dry clay and pie stamps to create personalized and unique place cards. Do not worry, I will provide you with a step-by-step guide throughout the entire process.
