Summer Happenings: Books and things.

One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by. ~Jeannette Walls,  The Glass Castle Ah, summer...it's hot out and the girls have been enjoying their time cooling off in their little pool. Occasionally I'll dip my feet in and enjoy a quick splash. Did I mention that it’s hot here?! Okay, I know it's summer and that's to be expected. This summer, we enjoyed peppers, cilantro, and tomatoes from our garden. - I'm thinking about making fresh salsa soon.  Our days are filled with reading, reading, and more reading! Our oldest completed her summer reading. She's enjoying her love for books. I'm so proud of her.  We recently attended the Dr. Seuss spectacular event for the book, What Pet Should I Get? It's believed to have been written between 1958 and 1962. It was discovered by his widow while she was cleaning out his office shortly after his death in 1991 and then it was rediscovered in 2013. Of course,...

Prepare. Sit. Eat. And Enjoy.

We're always so thrilled to try new recipes. Cooking at home is something we enjoy very much. We recently made a delicious dish. - Cabbage with beef/pork and rice topped with a spicy tomato sauce.  This delicious dish is one of   Martha Stewart's recipes.  It was very easy to prepare and it came together very well. Our 4-year-old daughter even had seconds.  We started off with the spicy tomato sauce. Heating a pan and adding onion, garlic, and red pepper flakes. We had this to cook until it was all tender. After putting our crushed tomatoes in a food processor, we then added the tomatoes and juice to the pan. We allowed it all to simmer and later thicken.  We also added a few of our own spices along with salt. While our sauce was cooling, I brought a pot of hot water to a boil. I added a few pinches of salt to the boiling water.  Then, I added the cabbage. It was easier for me to peel the cabbage apart prior to adding it to the ...

Summer fun. -Teddy Bear Picnic

This past weekend we took a little trip to the nature center. We packed a little picnic. -Sandwiches, fruit, and cold beverages to cool us down.  Our oldest daughter was thrilled that she was going on a teddy bear picnic. -This event included stories, crafts, a small hike, and a special guest. -Theodore Roosevelt.  The kids were given maps for their scavenger hunt. We set out to explore the outdoors and the children ran around.-Each child found an item on their map using the clues they were given. It was a fun adventure for all. After our hike, we found a cool place to unpack and enjoy our picnic. Ice cream was served and stories were read to the children.  As we headed back home, we had two sleepy little ones. This day was very enjoyable. I think we all took naps once we arrived home. Hooray for summer fun!  How are you enjoying your summer? I'd love to hear all about your summer adventures! Welcome new readers! So happy to have you ...

July. Lately

Lately... We've been enjoying our summer so much. How's your summer going?  We have been attending the library for special events and our oldest is zooming through the summer reading program. -She's pretty excited about the cute little prizes they get after each section is completed.  It's been raining so much. I'm actually enjoying it very much. On rainy days we play board games, build forts and just enjoy our time together as a family.  We came across some watermelon-flavored cupcakes while shopping. We baked them and spread them on some very green icing. -Honestly, I wasn't so crazy about them. Something about the flavor threw me off a bit. My oldest and my husband seemed to have enjoyed it. I'm happy they at least enjoyed it.  We've been grilling more. Chicken, steak, sausages, and more. My husband picked up a small smoker box for the grill. He's been adding in some wood chips when he starts up the grill....

Summer lovin' and melon pops

One benefit of summer was that each day we had more light to read by. ~Jeannette Walls,  The Glass Castle Oh, summer lovin'... We're enjoying having you around. We've been busy attending outdoor concerts, puppet shows at the library, and  little ones in the swimming pool. - We're having such a lovely time... MELON POPS It's been hot, and so I've been enjoying my time in the kitchen preparing summer drinks and refreshing popsicles.   Recently, I came across a recipe for melon pops. When I was younger, my mother would purchase these delicious Korean melon pops. I was thrilled when I came across this recipe on  http://www.thesquishymonster.com/ . I swear these melon pops are delicious and so easy to make. I hope you all are enjoying your summer!  Welcome new readers! I'm so happy to have you all here.

A few things.

A few things... -We're going over plants and seeds! My oldest absolutely loves helping in the garden. Right now she's observing a bean grow in a mason jar. Each day we take down a few notes and discuss the transformation of the bean. - I planned an event at the park! It was wonderful.- Paint and bubbles in the park. A few moms showed up with their little ones and we all enjoyed the nice weather and chatted. -I've been making shakers for my littlest one. She's moving and grooving. She's a very active baby and loves to shake things. Using an old cinnamon candy container, food coloring, and noodles, I was able to create a simple and fun shaker.  -My littlest one is now 8 months. I'm continuing to nurse her and she's exploring pureed foods. Her favorite is a squash with brown rice.  -Our oldest daughter loves reading to us now. She's so wonderful and we enjoy the time that she reads to us. Childr...
