Cozy DIY: Heart Decor Gets a Winter Refresh

There’s something so satisfying about giving new life to a craft you’ve already loved once before. This little heart-shaped decoration from Dollar Tree has already had its moment in the spotlight—first as part of a Valentine’s Day wreath, dressed in soft pinks and sweet charm. But as the seasons shift and winter settles in, it felt like the perfect time to transform this piece into something fresh, cozy, and winter‑inspired.

If you enjoy upcycling as much as I do, this project is a wonderful reminder that our décor doesn’t have to be single‑season. With a few simple supplies and a little creativity, you can turn a Valentine’s heart into a winter treasure.

Quick video tutorial

Materials You’ll Need
  • Acrylic paint (your winter color of choice)
  • Paintbrush
  • Mod Podge
  • Decorative tissue paper (winter patterns work beautifully)
  • Winter foliage (faux greenery, berries, pine sprigs, etc.)
  • Scissors
  • Optional: heating tool
  • Optional: embellishments like faux pearls, beads, or ribbon

Step 1: Prep Your Heart Decoration

Start by grabbing your original heart-shaped piece. If your previous design was heavily painted or textured, you can lightly sand the surface to smooth it out. In my case, the pink paint from Valentine’s Day was applied thinly, so I simply painted over it with my new winter color.

Choose a shade that fits your seasonal theme—icy blue, soft white, muted sage, or even a deep evergreen. Apply an even coat and let it dry completely. This step sets the tone for the entire makeover, so don’t rush the drying time.

Step 2: Add Your Decorative Paper

Once the paint is fully dry, it’s time to bring in the Mod Podge. Apply a thin, even layer to the front surface of the heart box. This will act as the adhesive for your decorative tissue paper.

Lay your tissue paper gently over the Mod Podge, smoothing it out with your fingers. Work slowly from the center outward to avoid wrinkles. Tissue paper can be delicate, but it’s also incredibly forgiving once sealed.

I like to use my heating tool on a low setting during this step. It helps the Mod Podge set more quickly and reduces bubbling, but it’s completely optional.

After the paper is in place, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge over the top to seal it. This gives the surface a finished look and protects the design.

When I first created this heart for Valentine’s Day, I added faux pearl beads around the edge of the heart, and I loved the delicate detail it added. You can absolutely bring that idea into your winter redo—or choose something new.

Consider:

  • Mini snowflake charms
  • Silver or white beads
  • Twine or ribbon
  • Glitter accents (used sparingly for a frosty effect)

This step is all about adding personality. Let your creativity guide you.

Step 3: Add Winter Foliage

Now for the finishing touch—winter greenery. I love reusing faux foliage from past projects, and this is the perfect opportunity to do just that. Small pine sprigs, frosted berries, eucalyptus, or even tiny pinecones can add beautiful texture and dimension.

Arrange your foliage along one side of the heart or cluster it at the top corner for a balanced look. Once you’re satisfied with the placement, secure everything in place with hot glue or your preferred adhesive.

Your Winter Heart Is Complete

And just like that, your Valentine’s décor has transformed into a winter‑ready piece that feels fresh, cozy, and handmade with love. This project is a wonderful reminder that creativity doesn’t have to start from scratch—sometimes the best ideas come from reimagining what we already have.

If you try this redo, I’d love to hear how you styled your winter heart. Upcycling is always more enjoyable when we share our ideas and inspire one another.

DIY Tea Tin Planter for Sweet Mint

Today’s tiny DIY win: turning an empty lemon‑ginger tea tin into a planter for a sweet mint plant that needed some love. I cleaned the tin, added drainage, and nestled the mint inside. It instantly brightened up the space — the colors on the tin and the fresh green leaves look so sweet together. I love giving everyday items a second life, especially when they end up this cute. Quick Video Tutorial  I began this little project by cleaning out an empty metal tea container that I had saved. It still held a soft scent of lemon and ginger, and I loved the idea of giving it a second life. Once I washed and dried it, the container felt ready for a new purpose.   Next, I used a finishing nail and a hammer to create a few drainage holes in the bottom of the tin. Since metal containers don’t have natural drainage, this step helps keep the roots healthy and prevents the soil from becoming soggy. Having prepared the container, I carefully removed the sweet mint from its original pot. The ...

Acrylic paint (I chose a deeper pink) Craft pom poms (yellow makes a great center!)
